Just as we had to confront strong opposition to build Nuevo Amanecer, we again found ourselves fighting to build Esperanza Court. This time opposition came from a number of city officials.
FHDC responded once again by organizing the residents or Nuevo Amanecer and other farmworkers in the larger community. Over 750 local residents signed petitions and many businesses wrote letters of support.
During the City Commission hearings, hundreds of farmworker families packed the council chambers. In the last hearing, which lasted almost until midnight, one former farmworker stood up and said to the commissioners "Think of where you'll be going and where the farmworkers will be going when this hearing ends tonight." Many of the farmworkers in attendance that night were going to return home to labor camps without running water and heating.
Because of this mobilizing effort and the leadership shown by farmworkers, the City Commission approved FHDC's plans for Esperanza Court.
Today, FHDC and its residents and the City of Woodburn have developed a strong partnership. In 2002, FHDC was seeking funds for a capital campaign to build the Cipriano Ferrel Education Center on the grounds of Nuevo Amanecer. The City of Woodburn came forward and offered to submit a Community Development Block Grant application to the State which would give us the money we needed to begin construction. We worked together on the application and were successful in our efforts.
