Since that initial scare last week, we are grateful to share that as of last week, evacuation levels have been reduced in the affected areas of Marion County and FHDC residents have been invited to return to their homes. We are grateful for this, yet we know there is trauma and work to do to support those who have lost lives, homes, animals, jobs, and more. And let’s not forget— there are many still sacrificing their health every day to put food on our tables harvesting food in the midst of the pandemic and the most toxic and hazardous air quality we have experienced in modern Oregon.
We are warmed by the outpouring of support we have received already. Your kind words and willingness to step up is truly heartfelt. We know that our work to support not only FHDC residents — but our Oregon communities at large — will require a deep commitment to public service, community health, and coalition building. That’s why we are asking you to support our partner, PCUN, who is working tirelessly in our area to connect those affected directly with food, basic needs, shelter, resources, and financial assistance. Even more— they are leading the way to put pressure on the Oregon legislature to protect farmworkers as they continue to work unprotected outdoors in these atrocious and harmful conditions.
