Our educational programs are designed to build leaders and promote integration into the public education system to help families break the cycle of generational poverty. The Cipriano Ferrel Education Center, is our educational headquarters and supports the learning and advancement of hundreds of families each year.
Preschool education services for 4-year-olds are provided at FHDC’s Cipriano Ferrel Education Center through the Woodburn School District (WSD). WSD offers two preschool programs:
Our Collaborative Preschool prepares children for Kindergarten and is available to Woodburn families with kids 4 and younger.
Preschool Promise serves children within 200% of the federal poverty level and operates daily.
After School Club
In partnership with the Woodburn School District, FHDC offers year-round after school and summer youth activities for youth including homework assistance, arts and crafts, sports or exercise, and educational activities.
- A free nutritious meal is provided through Woodburn School District.
- More than 50 families are signed up in 2018-2019
- FHDC also partners with Latina Girl Scouts to provide outdoor activities for FHDC’s Latina youth
- Several FHDC residents have been hired by the WSD to work at the after school and summer youth programs, including Promotores resident leaders and high school students.
FHDC recently partnered with Oregon Ask to examine the state of after-school programs in Oregon. Research showed that afterschool programs help students gain critical academic and leadership skills and address opportunity gaps. The State of Access and Equity of Afterschool in Oregon report found that students from underserved communities are least likely to participate in afterschool because of accessibility, cost, and cultural barriers. And yet, youth from underserved communities also demonstrate the most benefits from afterschool programs. The very youth that face the biggest barriers to accessing afterschool stand to gain the most from it.
